Domain .eu — for those who live or work in the EU
The European Union's extension, managed by EURid. It has a requirement many overlook: not everyone is entitled to hold it.
Who chooses this extension
What you need to know
- Only these can register it: EU citizens wherever they live, residents of the EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), and organizations established there.
- A business registered only in Albania, with no seat in the EU/EEA, doesn't meet the requirement.
- If the holder loses the eligibility, EURid may suspend and eventually revoke the domain — this happened to thousands of British holders after Brexit.
- When the requirement is met, there's no manual approval: the domain is activated instantly.
- The registry supports DNSSEC.

I'm Albanian and live in Albania — can I register .eu?
Only if you hold the citizenship of an EU country, or your business is headquartered in the EU/EEA. Albanian citizenship and living in Albania are not enough.
I live in Italy with a residence permit. Do I qualify?
Yes. Living in an EU country meets the requirement, regardless of citizenship.
What happens if I leave the EU?
If you no longer meet any condition, EURid may suspend the domain. Before you change your residence, move to an unrestricted extension like .com.
Does anyone check the requirement before registration?
The details you provide are declared true and the registry may verify them at any time. So register with details that genuinely meet the requirement.
